On this page you’ll find the resources you need to bring the 2018 Fossil Fuel Divestment Overture to your congregation and Presbytery so that it can be considered at the 223rd General Assembly in St. Louis in June, 2018.
NOTE that Hudson River Presbytery passed our overture in July 2017, so it is the "sponsoring" Presbytery, and all other presbyteries who pass the overture will become "concurring" Presbyteries. Our overture is officially listed as
[OVT-006] On Directing the Board of Pensions and the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Foundation to Divest from Fossil Fuel and Actively Invest in Securities That Focus on Renewable Energy
Overtures are made of two pieces: a recommendation to General Assembly (stating what we’d like the body to do) and a rationale (explaining why we think that’s the right thing to do).
For overtures from different presbyteries to be considered the same, the recommendations need to be identical, but the rationales can differ. Below are two versions of the overture with identical recommendations, but different rationales. Feel free to edit the rationale section to appeal to your own Presbytery.
As you're preparing to present, we commend these materials to you, written by Megan Gregory of Salem Presbytery. There are options and resources for both short and longer presentations.
