On this page you’ll find the resources you need to bring the 2016 Fossil Fuel Divestment Overture to your congregation and Presbytery.

Overtures are made of two pieces: a recommendation to General Assembly (stating what we’d like the body to do) and a rationale (explaining why we think that’s the right thing to do).

For overtures from different presbyteries to be considered the same, the recommendations need to match, but the rationales can be different for each presbytery.

We’ve created two versions of the overture: a short one with a one-page rationale that talks directly to Presbyterians and assumes you know what’s going on with climate change; and a longer three-page rationale that goes into a little deeper background on the issues. They both have identical recommendations.

You can start with either version of the overture and either customize it or use it as-is to present to your congregation and presbytery.

We’ve also provided some additional support:

  • If you want to understand more about the structure of the recommendation part of the overture, there’s a Recommendation-with-Commentary.
  • If you want to learn more about why the fossil fuel industry’s behavior fits the Presbyterian definition of divestment, there’s an extended Rationale with Principles and Criteria (for divestment).
  •  If you’re the wonky type who loves references, there’s an extensively footnoted copy of the long version of the overture.

Please use these resources as you see fit to help us bring this issue to General Assembly in 2016. It’s time to act on climate change. It’s time to divest, because together we are for creation!
